Update: Sol Duc Recovery Will Resume As Soon As Conditions Allow

June 17, 2025by Ranger Tom0

The recovery operation for an 18-year-old man’s body, found below Sol Duc Falls in the Olympic National Park, will resume as soon as conditions allow, according to a recent announcement from the park’s rescue team. The body was discovered on June 9, but attempts to recover it have been hampered by challenging conditions in the area, including high river flows in the 7-8′ wide canyon. The park’s rescue teams, who are skilled in technical and swiftwater rescue, have been working tirelessly to recover the body.

The rescue teams have faced significant challenges due to recent warm temperatures and rapid snowmelt, which have resulted in high river flows. The narrowness of the canyon has also posed a logistical challenge, necessitating the lowering of multiple responders into the canyon to attempt recovery. Despite these efforts, the recovery operation has so far been unsuccessful.

Safety remains the park’s top priority, and rangers will continue to monitor the target area, natural hazards, and changing conditions. The recovery operation will resume as soon as it is deemed safe to do so. The park has not provided a timeline for when this might be, but assures that efforts will continue until the operation is successfully completed.
