Whale Waters Update for Glacier Bay Effective August 9, 2025

August 9, 2025by Ranger Tom0

Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve Acting Superintendent, Joni Seay, has announced changes to the vessel speed limits in certain areas of the park. Specifically, the 13-knot speed limit for vessels is being lifted around South Sandy Cove and Garforth Island. This decision follows recent observations that have shown a decrease in humpback whales consistently feeding in these areas.

In response to the changing feeding patterns of the whales, new 13-knot temporary whale waters are being implemented around Gloomy Knob and Blue Mouse Cove. These measures are being put in place to protect at least 10 whales that have been observed feeding in these areas.

These changes are effective from August 9, 2025. The National Park Service continues to monitor the behavior and movement of the whales to ensure their protection and to maintain the balance of the marine ecosystem within the park.
