Rocky Mountain National Park to Implement the Poudre Headwaters Project; Some Areas in the Kawuneeche Valley Will Be Closed During the Week of August 25-31

August 12, 2025by Ranger Tom0

Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) has announced the implementation of the Poudre Headwaters Project. The project, set to take place during the week of August 25-31, 2025, is aimed at removing all non-native fish species from the Grand Ditch and its upstream and downstream tributaries within the park’s boundaries.

The Poudre Headwaters Project is an ecological initiative designed to restore the natural fish population and balance in the park’s waterways. This involves the elimination of non-native fish species that can potentially harm the ecosystem by outcompeting native species for food and habitat.

Visitors should be aware that some areas in the Kawuneeche Valley will be temporarily closed during the implementation of the project. Specific details about the closures have not been provided, but the park authorities encourage visitors to check the RMNP website for updates. The closures are expected to last only for the duration of the project week.
