Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks have announced the availability of surplus wood to the public via permit. These residential firewood permits, which are required before any wood can be collected, are being offered free of charge. The wood supply is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and is anticipated to be in high demand.
The source of the surplus wood is tree mortality within the parks, specifically from trees that were identified as potential hazards to visitors or property. This initiative not only mitigates potential risks within the parks, but also provides a valuable resource to local residents. Each family is allowed a limit of six cords of wood per year under this permit system.
Interested parties are encouraged to act quickly, as the firewood supply is expected to deplete rapidly. The availability of firewood is dependent on the supply, which is finite and may not last the entire year.
