Shenandoah National Park plans prescribed burn in Big Meadows

November 16, 2025by Ranger Tom0

Shenandoah National Park has announced plans to conduct a prescribed burn in Big Meadows. The operation, scheduled for Monday, November 17, 2025, is contingent on weather conditions. The controlled burn will cover an area of approximately 145 acres.

The fire management team at the park is overseeing the planned burn. Prescribed burns are an effective tool for reducing hazardous fuels, protecting human communities from extreme fires, minimizing the spread of pests and diseases, and maintaining the character and condition of fire-adapted ecosystems.

While the burn is in progress, certain areas of the park may be temporarily closed for safety reasons. Park visitors are advised to check the Shenandoah National Park website for updates and further information.
