The National Park Service has announced that both the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and the Curecanti National Recreation Area have shifted to Stage 2 Fire Restrictions. This change came into effect from August 14, at 12:01 am. The decision to escalate to Stage 2 restrictions is a preventative measure aimed at reducing the risk of wildfires, which can cause significant damage to these protected areas.
Stage 2 Fire Restrictions involve more stringent rules compared to Stage 1. This includes the prohibition of all campfires, even within developed campgrounds and picnic areas. Smoking is also only permitted within an enclosed vehicle or building. Operating a chainsaw or any other equipment powered by an internal combustion engine is also not allowed from 10 am to 6 pm.
The restrictions are in place due to the current dry conditions and increased fire danger in these areas. Visitors are urged to adhere to these restrictions to ensure the safety and preservation of the park’s natural resources and wildlife. The National Park Service will continue to monitor conditions and will lift the restrictions when it is deemed safe to do so.
