The National Park Service (NPS) has announced that US 441/Newfound Gap Road will fully reopen by 4 p.m. on September 12, a full 18 days ahead of the original schedule. The early reopening comes after extensive repair work was required due to a road washout that occurred on August 1.
The repair work was led in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The successful and early completion of the repairs restores an important corridor through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The reopening of Newfound Gap Road will significantly improve access for both visitors and local residents. The NPS has expressed its gratitude for the cooperation and patience of the public during the repair process. The early reopening stands as a testament to the dedication and hard work of the teams involved in the repair project.
