Prescribed Burn planned in Cades Cove on January 7 and 8

January 7, 2026by Ranger Tom0

The National Park Service (NPS) has announced plans to conduct a prescribed burn in the western part of Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The operation is scheduled for January 7 and 8, provided that weather conditions are favorable. The burn will target approximately 900 acres of land within the park.

The prescribed burn is part of a larger effort to restore native meadow habitats within the park. By burning the area, the NPS aims to reduce hazardous fuels that can contribute to uncontrolled wildfires. The operation will also help prevent the encroachment of woody vegetation into meadow areas.

In addition to restoring native habitats and reducing fire risks, the burn is intended to maintain the historic landscape of Cades Cove. This operation is part of the NPS’s commitment to preserving the natural and cultural resources of the national parks for the enjoyment of future generations.
