The Death Valley National Park, in collaboration with the Federal Highway Administration, has announced the reopening of Emigrant Canyon Road. The high-elevation route, a favored access point for summer recreation due to its cooler temperatures, had been severely damaged by a flash flood in August 2023.
The flood’s aftermath led to the road’s closure, with temporary measures implemented to allow reopening after a few months. However, these quick fixes had left the road susceptible to further wear and tear, as well as potential additional flood damage.
The recent reopening signifies the completion of more comprehensive repair work, ensuring the road’s stability and longevity. This development will allow visitors to once again enjoy the cooler summer recreational activities offered by the high-elevation areas of the Death Valley National Park, accessed via the Emigrant Canyon Road.
