Skier Killed in Avalanche on Mt. McKinley

June 12, 2025by Ranger Tom0

A skier was tragically killed in an avalanche on Mt. McKinley, the National Park Service has confirmed. The fatal incident occurred on the West Buttress Route, specifically below the Rescue Gully above Camp 14. The avalanche was categorized as a soft slab avalanche, one of the most dangerous types due to its deceptive appearance and potential for rapid movement.

The incident happened at approximately 6:15 p.m. on June 10, 2025. Despite the efforts of the rescue team, the skier could not be saved. The identity of the victim has not been released at this time. This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers faced by those who venture into the wild, even when engaging in recreational activities.

As investigations into the incident continue, the National Park Service is urging all visitors to exercise extreme caution when skiing or undertaking any outdoor activities in the area. They also advise all visitors to stay informed about the current weather conditions and potential avalanche risks in the region.
