September 12, 2025by Ranger Tom0

The National Park Service (NPS) has announced it will open a federal subsistence hunt on September 14, 2025. The hunt, taking place in Katmai National Preserve, will target the Kukaklek Shelf caribou.

This opportunity is exclusive to residents of Kokhanok and Igiugig, Alaska. To qualify, individuals must be federally recognized as subsistence users. This designation is part of an effort to maintain traditional lifestyles in these communities while managing and conserving wildlife populations.

For more details about the hunt, interested parties can visit the NPS website. The hunt is part of the NPS’s mission to protect natural resources while also providing recreational opportunities and supporting local communities.
