Fire Island National Seashore to Resume Deer Management Operations After Pause During January Winter Storm

February 19, 2026by Ranger Tom0

Deer removal operations at Fire Island National Seashore in Patchogue, New York are set to resume after being paused in January due to severe winter weather conditions. The operations, part of the Seashore’s White-tailed Deer Management Plan, were halted due to the impacts of a winter storm and freezing temperatures.

The operations will recommence on National Park Service (NPS) lands on Fire Island between February 23 and 27. The plan is a key part of the park’s ongoing efforts to manage the deer population and maintain the ecological balance within the park.

The resumption of operations is a critical component of the Seashore’s White-tailed Deer Management Plan, which aims to protect and preserve the park’s natural resources. This move is expected to help maintain a healthy and sustainable deer population within the park’s boundaries.
