Cattail Removal to Continue in Voyageurs National Park to Restore Wetland Habitat

June 22, 2026by Ranger Tom0

Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota is set to continue its ongoing campaign to restore native wetland ecosystems by removing invasive hybrid cattails from within park boundaries. The effort, scheduled to run from July through October 2026, represents the latest phase of a multi-year restoration initiative aimed at protecting and revitalizing the park’s ecologically important wetland habitats.

Hybrid cattails, a cross between native and non-native species, are known for their aggressive growth patterns and ability to outcompete native vegetation. Left unchecked, these invasive plants can form dense monocultures that dramatically reduce biodiversity, displace wildlife, and degrade the quality of wetland ecosystems that countless species depend on for food, shelter, and breeding grounds.

The removal work is part of a broader conservation strategy by the National Park Service to preserve the ecological integrity of Voyageurs, a water-based park renowned for its interconnected lakes, rivers, and wetlands along the Minnesota-Canada border. Restoration of native plant communities is expected to benefit a wide range of wildlife, including waterfowl, fish, amphibians, and other species that rely on healthy wetland environments.

Visitors to the park during the removal period may notice equipment and crews working in wetland areas throughout the summer and fall months. Park officials encourage the public to stay informed about ongoing restoration activities and to support efforts that help maintain the natural beauty and ecological health of one of America’s most unique national parks.
