Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument is preparing to mark a major historical milestone, as the National Park Service announces plans to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The three-day event, scheduled for June 25-27, 2026, will bring together a wide range of participants including tribal nations, elected officials, descendants of those who fought in the battle, historians, and community partners.
The Battle of the Little Bighorn, fought in June 1876 in what is now Montana, remains one of the most significant and storied conflicts between the United States Army and Native American forces. Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and his 7th Cavalry regiment were decisively defeated by Lakota Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors in a battle that has since captured the imagination of historians and the public alike for nearly a century and a half.
Organizers say the 150th anniversary commemoration is designed not only to remember the battle itself, but to foster deeper understanding through reflection, learning, and cultural exchange. The inclusive approach, centering tribal voices alongside historical scholarship, reflects a broader shift in how the site has been interpreted in recent decades, acknowledging the perspectives of all those connected to this pivotal moment in American history.
