Cape Hatteras National Seashore has announced a temporary closure of Billy Mitchell Airport (HSE) beginning September 8, as crews prepare to undertake a significant runway pavement rehabilitation project. The closure will allow workers to fully resurface the airport’s paved areas, improving conditions for pilots and visitors who rely on the facility.
The rehabilitation project includes more than just a simple repaving effort. Upgrades will feature new reflective paint markings and the installation of new tie-downs and anchors, all designed to boost safety standards and modernize the airport’s infrastructure. Officials say the improvements will meaningfully enhance the overall visitor experience at the national seashore.
Billy Mitchell Airport, located on Hatteras Island in North Carolina, serves as an important access point for visitors to one of the East Coast’s most beloved coastal destinations. The facility is managed by the National Park Service as part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the nation’s first national seashore established in 1953.
Travelers and pilots with plans to use the airport during the closure period are advised to make alternative arrangements. The National Park Service has not yet announced an expected completion date for the project, and visitors are encouraged to check for updates through official NPS channels before making travel plans.
