Georgetown University, National Park Service and District of Columbia announce agreement to increase public waterfront access along the Georgetown Waterfront

June 11, 2025by Ranger Tom0

Georgetown University, the National Park Service (NPS), and the District of Columbia have announced an agreement to enhance public access to the waterfront along the Georgetown Waterfront. A key part of this agreement involves Georgetown University donating a parcel of land on the Potomac River to the National Park Service. This land will be incorporated into the boundary of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park.

The donated land parcel includes an easement along the Capital Crescent Trail. This easement, a private right of way over the land of another, will be extinguished once the land donation is completed. The termination of this easement is a significant part of the agreement as it will enable uninterrupted public use of the trail.

This agreement represents a collaborative effort between Georgetown University, the National Park Service, and the District of Columbia to improve public access to the waterfront. By incorporating the donated land into the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, a more seamless and continuous public experience of the waterfront and the trail will be created.
