Dinosaur National Monument Implements Fire Restrictions

June 24, 2026by Ranger Tom0

Dinosaur National Monument is set to implement Stage 1 fire restrictions beginning Friday, June 26, 2026, at 12:01 a.m., according to an announcement from Superintendent Phil Akers. The restrictions come as land managers work to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires in the monument, which straddles the border of Colorado and Utah.

Under Stage 1 restrictions, visitors to the monument will face limitations on open burning activities. Typically, such restrictions prohibit campfires outside of designated fire grates or fire rings, the use of charcoal, and the burning of wood or other solid fuels in areas not specifically designed for contained fires. Visitors are generally still permitted to use gas or propane stoves and grills with shut-off valves.

Fire restrictions are a common precautionary measure taken by national parks and monuments during periods of dry or hot weather, when conditions increase the likelihood that a small spark could grow into a dangerous and destructive wildfire. Dinosaur National Monument, known for its vast high desert landscape and fossil beds, can be particularly vulnerable during summer months.

Visitors planning trips to the monument are encouraged to check current conditions and review all applicable fire restrictions before their visit to ensure compliance and help protect this treasured natural and historic landmark.
