Cape Hatteras National Seashore Begins Treatments to Control Invasive Reed
Cape Hatteras National Seashore is beginning a multiweek effort to control invasive common reed, known as Phragmites australis, in wetland areas across the park.
Crews will use both aerial and ground-based herbicide treatments to reduce the reed’s spread. Phragmites can form dense stands that crowd out native plants and degrade wetland habitats.
The project is intended to help restore native vegetation and improve the ecological health of the seashore’s wetlands. Visitors may notice treatment activity in affected areas over the coming weeks.
