Death Valley National Park Begins Critical Water and Wastewater System Modernization Project

Death Valley National Park broke ground Oct. 21 on a major rehabilitation of the water and wastewater systems serving the Furnace Creek area. The $69.5 million project will modernize aging infrastructure used by park visitors, employees, residents and the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe.

The three-year Furnace Creek Water Systems Rehabilitation Project is intended to address years of deferred maintenance and improve the reliability of essential services in one of the nation’s most extreme environments. Upgrades are expected to strengthen both drinking-water delivery and wastewater management.

The work is funded through the Legacy Restoration Fund, established by the Great American Outdoors Act signed into law by President Donald J. Trump in 2020. The fund supports repairs and modernization projects across national parks and other public lands.
