The National Park Service is urging boaters at Colorado’s Blue Mesa Reservoir to brace for significant changes to marina operations as water levels at the reservoir continue to drop. Officials say the declining conditions will affect boat ramp access at two key locations: Elk Creek and Lake Fork marinas.
To ensure the safety and functionality of marina facilities amid falling water levels, the NPS plans to relocate marina infrastructure to deeper areas of the reservoir. The move is intended to keep essential services operational for as long as possible as the situation evolves.
One of the most notable impacts for visitors will be the loss of trailered watercraft access. As reservoir elevations decrease, traditional boat ramps will no longer be usable for launching trailered boats. However, boaters with non-trailered, hand-launched watercraft, such as kayaks and canoes, will still be able to access the water.
Blue Mesa Reservoir, the largest body of water in Colorado and a popular destination for fishing and recreation, has been experiencing declining water levels, a trend seen across many Western reservoirs in recent years amid prolonged drought conditions. The NPS is encouraging boaters to plan ahead and stay informed about conditions before visiting.
