Prescribed Burn Planned at North Cascades National Park Service Complex to Improve Habitat and Reduce Wildfire Risk

The National Park Service and U.S. Wildland Fire Service are preparing to conduct prescribed pile burns in Ross Lake and Lake Chelan national recreation areas during October and November. The work will proceed only when weather, fuel conditions and staffing allow crews to burn safely.

The planned burns will dispose of vegetation and woody debris collected during previous fuel-reduction projects. Removing these piles is intended to reduce the amount of combustible material near developed areas, lower the risk of severe wildfires and improve wildlife habitat within the North Cascades National Park Service Complex.

Visitors and nearby residents may see or smell smoke while burning is underway. Fire managers will monitor conditions and follow established safety and smoke-management requirements, adjusting or postponing operations if conditions are unsuitable.
