Tularemia Detected in Glacier National Park’s Many Glacier Valley
Glacier National Park officials have confirmed that two dead snowshoe hares found in the park’s Many Glacier Valley tested positive for tularemia, a rare but potentially serious bacterial disease.
Tularemia can infect wildlife, pets and people. Transmission may occur through contact with an infected animal, bites from ticks or biting flies, contaminated water, or inhalation of bacteria from infected material.
Visitors should avoid touching sick or dead wildlife, keep pets away from animal carcasses and report unusual wildlife deaths to park staff. Anyone who develops symptoms after a possible exposure should contact a medical provider and mention the potential risk of tularemia.
