Hōlei Sea Arch Collapses in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park

The iconic Hōlei Sea Arch in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park has collapsed into the Pacific Ocean, reshaping one of the park’s best-known coastal landmarks. The natural formation stood along the remote, rugged shoreline at the end of Chain of Craters Road.

The collapse reflects the continual transformation of Hawai‘i Island’s volcanic coast. Waves, wind and erosion steadily carve sea cliffs and lava formations, creating arches that can eventually weaken and fall into the ocean.

Park officials said the loss is another reminder that the landscape of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park remains dynamic. Visitors should follow posted safety guidance and keep away from unstable cliff edges while viewing the coastline.
