Indiana Dunes National Park Releases 1600 Lab Grown Native Mussels into the Little Calumet River to Improve Water Quality
Indiana Dunes National Park has released more than 1,600 laboratory-raised fatmucket mussels into the East Branch of the Little Calumet River near Porter, Indiana. The project aims to restore a native species while improving the health of the river ecosystem.
Freshwater mussels act as natural filters, removing suspended particles from the water as they feed. By reestablishing a healthy mussel population, park officials hope to enhance water quality and support other aquatic plants and animals.
The release also highlights broader efforts to restore native wildlife in the Little Calumet River. Scientists will be able to monitor the mussels over time to assess their survival and their contribution to the recovering habitat.
