National Park Service Proposes Off-Road Vehicle Access for Subsistence in Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve

The Department of the Interior and National Park Service have proposed allowing qualifying rural residents of Anaktuvuk Pass to use off-road vehicles for lawful subsistence activities in Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve.

The proposed rule would establish motorized access for eligible residents who rely on the park’s natural resources for subsistence. It seeks to address local access needs while maintaining federal oversight of activities within the protected area.

The proposal is open for public comment for 60 days, giving residents, organizations and other interested parties an opportunity to provide feedback before a final decision is made.
