Prescribed Fire Planned at Gran Quivira Unit to Reduce Wildfire Risk

Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument and the U.S. Wildland Fire Service plan to conduct a prescribed fire at the monument’s Gran Quivira Unit between Oct. 19 and Oct. 21, 2026, if weather and fuel conditions are favorable.

The unit is located about 20 miles southeast of Mountainair, New Mexico. The controlled burn is intended to reduce hazardous vegetation and lower the risk of a more severe wildfire in the area.

Fire managers will proceed only when conditions allow crews to meet safety and resource-management objectives. Residents and visitors near Gran Quivira may see smoke or increased fire personnel during the operation.
