Prescribed Burn Planned at Badlands National Park to Improve Habitat and Reduce Wildfire Risk
Badlands National Park and the U.S. Wildlife Fire Service plan to conduct the Big Buffalo Prescribed Burn in the northeastern portion of the park’s North Unit. The operation could begin as early as Oct. 30, 2026, depending on weather and site conditions.
The controlled burn is intended to improve wildlife habitat and reduce the buildup of vegetation that could fuel future wildfires. Prescribed fire also supports the health of the park’s prairie ecosystem by mimicking naturally occurring burns.
Officials will proceed only when conditions allow crews to safely manage the fire and smoke. Visitors and nearby residents may see smoke or encounter temporary restrictions while the burn is underway.
