White Nose Syndrome Detected in Bats in Glacier National Park
Glacier National Park has confirmed its first case of white-nose syndrome, a deadly disease affecting bats. The disease was detected in a little brown bat found dead in May near Saint Mary, Montana.
Samples collected from live bats in June also revealed the presence of Pseudogymnoascus destructans, the fungus that causes white-nose syndrome, in multiple bats on the park’s east side.
The findings mark the first confirmed detections of both the fungus and the disease in Glacier National Park and Glacier County, raising concerns about the health of local bat populations.
