Great Smoky Mountains National Park Completes Reconstruction of Historic John Messer Barn in Greenbrier

Great Smoky Mountains National Park has completed the reconstruction of the historic John Messer Barn in Greenbrier after the structure sustained extensive storm damage. The project was carried out in partnership with Friends of the Smokies.

Park officials, Friends of the Smokies leaders and descendants of the Greenbrier community marked the milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 28. The gathering celebrated both the restored barn and the community history it represents.

The reconstruction preserves an important piece of Greenbrier’s cultural landscape, ensuring that visitors can continue to connect with the people and agricultural traditions that shaped the area before it became part of the national park.
